A Pulaski County liquor store owner and a would-be robber were each shot Monday night in an exchange of gunfire during an attempted holdup, authorities said.

Both the owner, identified as 76-year-old Charles Tatum, and the robbery suspect, 23-year-old Jodeci Allen, were taken to local hospitals for treatment. Police said they were listed as being in critical condition but with non-life threatening injuries.

It happened about 9:20 p.m. at 145th Street Liquor, which is located just west of Wrightsville at 4608 145th St.

According to a Pulaski County sheriff's office report, arriving deputies found both men injured inside the business — Allen with a gunshot wound to the head and Tatum with one to the stomach — as well as cash "strewn about on the counter and in the floor behind the counter."

A black revolver was taken at the scene as evidence, the report added.

Sheriff's office spokesman Capt. Carl Minden said it was an attempted holdup and that Allen will face an aggravated robbery charge. Other counts are also possible, he said.
