In a statement Wednesday, Republican U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas said his 34 Democratic colleagues who supported President Barack Obama's Iran nuclear deal "bowed to White House pressure."

He added that the 34 senators "put partisan politics ahead of national security and their constituents."

"The consequences of this decision cannot be overstated and the American people will not soon forget their votes," Cotton said in the statement.

Cotton called attempts to block a vote on a resolution "unacceptable," adding that "blocking the Senate from voting on a resolution would be an insult to our constitutional system and a black mark on our institution."

The Associated Press reported Wednesday that Democratic Sen. Barbara Mikulski of Maryland became the crucial 34th vote to secure a victory for the Obama administration.

The agreement limits Iran's nuclear program in exchange for relief from hundreds of billions of dollars in sanctions, the AP reported.
