Goodson announces campaign for chief justice

Arkansas Supreme Court Associate Justice Courtney Goodson has announced she is running to be chief justice of the state's high court.

"I believe the Arkansas Supreme Court must always be a place where the Constitution is upheld, the rule of law carries the day, and the people are in charge," Goodson said in a statement posted on a campaign Facebook page early Wednesday morning. "I will work every day to earn this victory and earn the trust of the people of this state."

Goodson's announcement comes a day after longtime University of Arkansas law professor Howard Brill was sworn in as chief justice. Brill will serve the remainder of former Chief Justice Jim Hannah's term, which runs through the start of 2017. Brill cannot run for the seat, which Hannah vacated Monday for health reasons.

Goodson served as an Arkansas Court of Appeals judge before being elected to the state Supreme Court in 2010.
