The Badgers trailed Greenbrier 14-0 midway through the second quarter of their season opener Tuesday night at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, but Beebe never showed any sign of panic.

They just kept giving the ball to seniors Jovaughn Wyrick and Trip Smith, who combined for 380 rushing yards as the Badgers came back for a 41-27 victory. Wyrick rushed for 213 yards and 4 touchdowns on 25 carries, while Smith had 167 yards and 1 touchdown on a game-high 32 carries.

Beebe Coach John Shannon said his team hasn't looked back since the middle of last October.

"Our kids learned how to trust one another," Shannon said. "They learned how to overcome adversity, and we ended up going to the semifinals. That was our theme all offseason, being mentally tough, learning to handle adversity and learning how to trust one another."

WARREN

Learning curve

Warren Coach Bo Hembree wasn't too pleased with his Lumberjacks despite a 59-30 victory over Smackover on Monday night at Golden Lion Stadium in Pine Bluff.

The Lumberjacks, the defending Class 4A state champions, piled up 486 yards of offense against the Class 3A runner-up, but Hembree said his team has a lot of work to do before returning to action Sept. 11 against Stuttgart.

"We missed a lot of assignments up front," Hembree said. "We didn't communicate very well. There's stuff that we hope we'll get better from and stuff we've got to get better from. They gave us different looks and we weren't ready for what they did.

"When you're dealing with young kids like we are right now, you have to go over every little detail."

One of the positives for Warren was senior wide receiver Peyton Hargis, who caught 3 passes for 151 yards and 3 touchdowns. Hargis also plays defensive end and is one of Warren's top players on that unit, but it didn't surprise Hembree that Hargis was such a force on offense in the opener.

"We knew that the whole time," Hembree said. "We didn't have to play him on offense. He has been one of our better receivers over the past couple of years, but when he's one of your best defensive players too you have to keep him playing one way.

"He's fast. He can run. He's got great hands. He's just a great football player."

VILONIA

No mercy

Vilonia fell behind Sylvan Hills 35-0 and 42-7 in Monday's season opener at War Memorial Stadium, but the Eagles never fell victim to the running clock.

Junior Luke Gordon hit senior receiver Tripp Reed for a 7-yard touchdown pass on the final play of the first half to help Vilonia avoid the stigma of having to finish the game under the national sportsmanship rule that starts when a team trails by 35 points or more in the second half.

"We have not been mercy-ruled," Vilonia Coach Michael Stout said. "I guess that's a moral victory. We did make a run at them in the third quarter, but we just couldn't quite get it done."

Vilonia, which pulled to within 42-22 with 1:23 remaining in the third quarter, rolled up 372 total yards and the Eagles earned the same number of first downs (23) as Sylvan Hills. But the Eagles' first three possessions stalled inside the Sylvan Hills' 40-yard line.

"It was just a lack of experience," said Stout, whose team is running from a Spread formation in its first season under the coach after a decade of running from the Double Wing. "These kids have been running the same thing since the seventh grade, and any time you change something like that it's just going to take time."

EXTRA POINTS

Shiloh Christian snapped Charleston's 29-game winning streak with a 77-40 victory Tuesday night at Reynolds Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville. Now Pulaski Academy has the state's second-longest winning streak at 13 victories. Junction City, which has won the past three Class 2A state titles, has the longest streak at 40 consecutive games. ... North Little Rock High School will have a dedication ceremony for its new stadium at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The Charging Wildcats host Little Rock Catholic at 7 p.m. ... Little Rock Catholic's home game against Cabot next week will be played Thursday, Sept. 10, at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock. The University of Arkansas is playing Toledo on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the stadium, which is why the Rockets will play on Thursday instead of Friday.
