Former Arkansas Razorback D.J. Williams said on Twitter on Friday he did not make the Washington Redskins final roster after signing with the team last month.

Williams wrote shortly before 3 p.m. that he had "some unfortunate news" and that his "run to make the team came to an end."

"But I had a blast and excited for what's next! Thanks for the support," he added.

Williams won the Mackey Award as the country's best tight end in 2010 and was selected the next year by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round of the NFL draft. He later signed with the New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Williams was out of the NFL in February when he joined KARK, serving as an on-air personality for the station's morning show. The Redskins said Aug. 16 they had signed him after two of their tight ends — Niles Paul and Logan Paulsen — suffered injuries.

In addition to being honored as the nation's top tight end, Williams in 2010 won the Disney Spirit Award as college football's most inspirational figure. He has been a vocal advocate for domestic violence victims, sharing his family's story of leaving his abusive, drug-addicted father when Williams was a child.
