Dean paves way for West Memphis

FORREST CITY -- West Memphis cashed in on two early Forrest City mistakes on its way to a 41-6 victory over the Mustangs.

West Memphis quarterback Kylin Whiting completed 5 of 19 passes for 63 yards, but he rushed for a game-high 126 yards and backfield mate Devontae Dean scored 4 touchdowns.

"We found out Kylin had quick feet this summer when we played a team camp," said West Memphis Coach Billy Elmore. "We've encouraged him to run out of the pocket if he sees enough space."

West Memphis ran 23 plays in the first quarter to Forrest City's 1 and held a 45-16 advantage by halftime.

Forrest City quarterback Tarik Jones was intercepted by West Memphis' Todd Kyrien at the Forrest City 44 on the Mustangs' only play of the first quarter.

Dean scored his first touchdown from 1 yard 13 plays later.

Forrest City, which hasn't beaten West Memphis since 1997, answered quickly as Kendrick Johnson returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown as the Mustangs trailed 7-6.

West Memphis' Jonathan Craig's 11-yard touchdown seven plays later pushed the Blue Devils' lead to 14-6. Kyrien recovered an onside kick which set up another Dean touchdown for a 21-6 West Memphis lead early in the second quarter.

West Memphis led 27-6 at halftime on another Dean touchdown.

The second half belonged to Whiting, who rushed for 89 of his 126 yards.

Whiting suffered nine drops of his 14 incompletions.

"That's something we'll have to work on in practice," he said. "When you win the drops don't seem like that big a deal."

The Blue Devils, who outrushed Forrest City 141-9 by halftime, scored on Dean's third touchdown with 5:21 left in the third quarter. They capped the scoring on Dean's 15-yard touchdown.

Dean had 109 yards to go with the four touchdowns.
