Cause of our troubles

Any mythological god whose laws do not change is trustworthy. Leaders who indiscriminately change laws are untrustworthy. Leaders who refuse to enforce the laws are examples to the lawless.

Even if the United States is not or never was a Christian nation, the cause of our problems should be obvious.

DON CROWSON

By any other name ...

Scott Peterson is on death row in San Quentin Prison, convicted of first-degree murder for killing his wife, Laci, and second-degree murder for killing their son, Conner, who was unborn. How is the murder of Conner different from what Planned Parenthood abortion butchers do? The abortionists kill unborn babies, using the excuse of women's rights to their own bodies, which, in my opinion, is the most barbaric scam that has ever been foisted upon civilized society.

Apparently, the fact which women's rights abortionists conveniently dismiss is that the baby inside the woman's womb is not the woman's body, nor even a part of her body. It is another human being who is attached to her, and it is a human being from the moment of conception.

I believe God designed woman's womb as a haven for new life and no woman has the right to turn it into a chamber of death. Isn't deliberately ending an unborn baby's life murder, no matter how they want to whitewash it?

Just wondering, ladies: Whatever happened to getting married, staying married, and becoming a family like God ordained? "Playing house" to "test the waters" to see if marriage would work is fornication. The right way is to get married and make it work!

If the male in your life doesn't want to be your husband, then he is just using you, and the sooner you get rid of him, the sooner your life will improve. There is a decent man waiting for you somewhere, but you are not apt to find him in a beer joint or a bar. You can turn your life around, even as a single parent. The way to do so is in Jesus Christ.

Possibly possessed?

After seeing all of Hillary's problems, her questionable ethics, the paranoia and the absolute arrogance, I wonder if she hasn't been possessed by a malevolent spirit. Perhaps that of ol' Tricky Dick Nixon?

And, please, more of Mr. John Brummett's column of political humor. He's even funnier than old Rush!

Not hard to fathom

As we are at Labor Day, the presidential campaign season is in full swing and Donald Trump seems to be all the rage. Pundits and professional politicians are seemingly at a loss as to why Trump is doing so well in the polls on the Republican side, given his lack of government experience.

It certainly isn't a surprise to me because it seems Trump personifies everything the hard right loves. Greed, avarice, arrogance and contempt for anyone they deem underneath them.

Worries about water

In 2005, the state of Oklahoma sued the Arkansas poultry industry over the practice of using chicken litter as fertilizer within the Illinois River watershed. That ruling is still pending, but caused the poultry industry to take action and begin to ship the waste out of the region. What prompted the lawsuit was the increase in algae downstream in lakes due to the phosphorus level in the water. Algae produce toxins that are deadly to fish and severely impact drinking water quality. Recently, an algae bloom in Lake Erie threatened Toledo, Ohio's drinking water. Again, fertilizer runoff is the culprit. How does the runoff make it to the lake? By small streams, creeks, ditches, etc.

Arkansas is one of 13 states to sue to stop the latest rule by the EPA to determine what entity can rule on the quality of small streams and watersheds. Thank goodness Arkansas outreach director Steve Filipek spoke with clarity and honesty on what is at stake. How is it that the 37 other states are okay with the rule and 13 states are not?

If you don't want to worry about the water you drink from the tap, or the fish and wildlife you consume, then the people of Arkansas better start staying on top of this and hold those in power accountable. On the other side with big business and big agri corporations are apparently our entire congressional delegation, Arkansas Farm Bureau, Chamber of Commerce and Attorney General Leslie Rutledge. Why was a hog farm allowed in the Buffalo River watershed? Why was Exxon allowed to say no to moving the pipeline away from Lake Maumelle? It comes down to money and some that want to do what they damn well please.

It's sad to think what we are going to pass on to our children and how we will eventually be judged for our stewardship of the earth.

Nothing to fret about

Re Mr. Dick Price's letter referring to the delinquency of yard rolling: I have three children, two daughters and a son, all grown now. Over the course of their high school stay, I would imagine our yard has been rolled maybe 10 to 15 times. Not once on the following morning did I run into the yard red-faced, bellowing obscenities and threatening citizen's arrest. I would laugh a little, shake my head and hand someone the rake.

Over the years we saw hundreds of kids come in and out of our doors, all shapes, sizes and colors. Many of these young people might have rolled a yard or two, but all that I know of have become wonderful people and citizens. The truth is, young people who roll yards most likely aren't the ones who key Mercedes. There are a lot worse things they could be doing than throwing toilet paper over tree limbs.

Maybe Mr. Price didn't have any children or maybe he's just forgotten what it's like to be one. By the way, guys with attitudes like that are prank magnets!
