Former Hog, Cowboy Dossey dies

Jerry Dossey, an All-Southwest guard for Arkansas' football team as a senior in 1969, died Sunday from an apparent heart attack. He was 67.

Dossey, who lettered from 1967-69, was a member of the Razorbacks all-decade team for the 1960s. He played on teams that were a combined 23-8-1.

The Dallas Cowboys selected Dossey in the eighth round of the 1970 NFL Draft.

Dossey, a native of Lawton, Okla., was an attorney in Bentonville for the past 41 years. He earned a degree in business administration from Arkansas in 1970 and earned a law degree from the UA in 1974.

Dossey is survived by his wife, Linda Joy Dossey, five children and five grandchildren.

Per his request, no memorial service will be held. He asked "friends to individually reflect on our relationships in their own way, hopefully the funny or happy times."

Akins, Bassett tabbed by conference

Arkansas Tech linebacker Nick Akins was named the Great American Conference defensive player of the week on Tuesday, while Harding's Corey Bassett was named the conference's special teams player of the week.

Akins recovered a fumble for a touchdown on Southern Nazarene's first offensive play as Arkansas Tech lined up with 10 players to honor late teammate Zemaric Holt. He finished with 5 tackles, including 2 tackles for loss, and 1 sack.

Bassett blocked Oklahoma Baptist's potential game-winning field goal at the end of regulation as Harding eventually won in overtime. He also returned a punt 24 yards to set up Harding's second touchdown.

UCA finishes 5th, UALR 7th at KSU event

The Central Arkansas women shot 298-307-289--894 to finish fifth and the UALR women finished seventh after shooting a 929 at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational in Manhattan, Kan.

UCA freshman Emma Svensson shot 72-75-69 for an even-par 216 to finish tied for third, while sophomore Fernanda Lira shot a final-round 70 to finish at 217 and tied for fifth. Sabrina Bonanno led UALR, shooting 11 over to finish in a tie for 21st.

SMU won the tournament at 873, followed by TCU (875), Middle Tennessee (882) and host Kansas State (890).

Gartmann leads HSU women

Luisa Gartmann shot an opening-round 77 and tied for 13th, leading the Henderson State women to a sixth-place finish Tuesday at the Central Region Fall Preview in Olathe, Kan.

Hanna Bauburger shot a 79 and is tied for 22nd. Henderson State shot 318 and is the top team among five Great American Conference schools participating. Augustana (296) leads the tournament, followed by Northeastern State (303) and Central Oklahoma (313).

UALR women blank UAPB

Shannon Shields scored three goals and Fali Garuba added two as the UALR women defeated UAPB 8-0 Tuesday in Little Rock. The Trojans (4-3) also got goals from Mikayla Uyokpeyi, Quin Wilkes and Deyaris Perez as they won their 10th consecutive home nonconference game and their fifth consecutive game against the Lions (1-4).

UCA’s Carson gets conference honor

After scoring three goals in the Conway Derby over the weekend, Central Arkansas junior Wes Carson was named the Missouri Valley Conference offensive player of the week on Tuesday. Carson scored two goals against Central Baptist on Friday, including the game winner in the 80th minute. He scored the Bears’ first goal against Incarnate Word on Sunday.

UCA freshman honored

Central Arkansas freshman Markus Schweikert has been named the Southland Conference men's athlete of the week.

Schweikert, from Frankfurt, Germany, finished 10th at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic on Saturday, helping the Bears to a second-place finish among 26 college teams. He ran the 4-mile course in 20 minutes, 29.48 seconds.

UCA had five runners finish in the top 26 to finish second behind Alabama. Mississippi State, Mississippi, Harding and Arkansas State rounded out the top six.

VOLLEYBALL

Jacoby leads HSU to victory

Jessie Jacoby had 19 kills and nine digs to lead Henderson State to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-22) victory over Central Baptist on Tuesday at the Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia.

Setter Brea May had 35 assists, 4 aces and 6 digs for Henderson State (1-4), which earned its first victory for Coach Kristee Porter. Kylie Pyles had nine spikes for the Reddies and Violet Williams added eight kills.

Taylor Graham led Central Baptist (5-8) with six kills.

John Brown sweeps Williams Baptist

Senior Audrey Dearien had 12 kills and 10 digs while junior Molli Pugh added 12 kills as John Brown (8-1) rallied to win the final three sets in a 3-1 (21-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-22) victory over Williams Baptist on Tuesday at the Southerland-Mabee Center in Walnut Ridge.

Setter Alyssa Arnold finished with a game-high 42 assists for John Brown. Kaillie Ralston led Williams Baptist with 16 kills, while Madison Laubach and Harley Strayhorn added eight kills each. Taylor Barton had a team-high 20 assists, and Jordan Harvey added 15.

Nagel earns conference honor

Arkansas Tech libero Madison Nagel was named the Great American Conference defensive player of the week on Tuesday.

Nagel, who earned GAC Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors last season, had 77 digs and 6 aces over 4 matches at the Hilton Garden Inn Classic last weekend. She had 26 digs in the Golden Suns' first match against Texas A&M International and added 23 against Texas Woman's University.
