Former chairman gives $5 million to University of Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK — A former chairman of the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees is donating $5 million to support the university system's office of the president.

The donation from Charles E. Scharlau was announced Friday at the UA board's regular meeting. Scharlau served on the board from 1997 to 2007 and was elected chairman for the 2005-06 academic year.

The gift, which will be made in future installments, will create an endowed chair in presidential leadership at the University of Arkansas System. It will be used to support the office in its role in managing and operating the university system.

Scharlau worked 47 years for Southwestern Energy Co., serving as chairman of the board and chief executive officer. He is a native of Mountain Home and a longtime resident of Fayetteville.
