A Greenwood woman charged in the death of her infant son in the Ouachita Mountains pleaded guilty Friday to a single charge of manslaughter.

Brooke Floyd was then sentenced to 10 years of probation and a $1,000 fine, Bill James, her attorney, said.

Floyd was charged in the death of 10-month-old Harper Alexander Floyd after the boy and his father, 33-year-old Brian Floyd, were found dead in the wooded area in July 2014. Authorities said they believed methamphetamine-induced hallucinations led Floyd to abandon them, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette previously reported.

James said Floyd has been improving her life, noting she has been working and receiving counseling. He said the plea deal was the right decision.

"Anytime you have a dead child, you never know what a jury's going to do," he said. "That kind of emotion in the courtroom has the ability to take on its own life. ... She certainly wasn't directly responsible for the child's death, but as the mother we felt like people might hold her to that responsibility."
