Rison nips Junction City, ends Dragons' streak at 41

RISON -- Four-time defending Class 2A champion Junction City had its 41-game winning streak come to an end Friday night, falling to Rison 15-14.

It was Junction City's first loss since a season-opening defeat to Earle in 2012.

Junction City trailed 15-0 with less than 10 minutes to play, but the Dragons didn't go down easily.

Junction City scored twice, and converted a two-point conversion after its first touchdown when Shuvascayae Frazier plucked Will Smith's deflected pass out of the air to make it 15-8 with 2:55 to play.

The Dragons recovered an onside kick at midfield, and after a penalty moved them back to the 35, Junction City scored in four plays, highlighted by Blake McLelland's 54-yard run.

Smith, who scored Junction City's first touchdown on a 4-yard run, scored on a 2-yard run to make it 15-14 with 1:32 play.

Smith rolled out on the two-point conversion attempt, but a Rison defender knocked it away for the Wildcats (1-1, 1-0).

Junction City attempted another onside kick, but Rison recovered and ran out the clock.

Rison took an 8-0 lead on Bryson Marks' 1-yard run and his two-point conversion in the third quarter.

Rison increased its lead when JaQuan Henry's 7-yard run made it 14-0 with 9:55 to play, and Mateo Oliver's extra point gave Rison a 15-0 lead.

ARKANSAS BAPTIST 28

CHERRY VALLEY — Senior running back Anfernee Davis rushed for 300 yards and five touchdowns to lead Cross County (2-0) to a come-from-behind victory against Arkansas Baptist (0-2).

Davis’ night included touchdown runs of 6 yards in the first quarter, 22 yards in the second and 5 yards in the third, but it was his two scoring runs in the fourth quarter that proved decisive.

His first touchdown in the final quarter brought the Thunderbirds to within 28-26.

EARLE 28, RIVERCREST 21

EARLE — Marcus Brown and Richard Merritt combined for four touchdowns to lead Earle (2-0) past Rivercrest (1-1). Brown scored on an 89-yard kickoff return in the first quarter and a 60-yard pass from Dontrell Johnson in the second quarter. Merritt had two rushing touchdowns in the second half and finished with 178 yards on the ground.

ENGLAND 49, MINERAL SPRINGS 14

ENGLAND — Junior quarterback Brayden Brazeal completed 11 of 16 passes for 135 yards and 1 touchdown as England rolled to a victory over Mineral Springs. Brazeal also rushed for 45 yards on five carries. Malik Coleman rushed for 103 yards and 2 touchdowns on 7 carries and caught 1 pass for 17 yards. Wide receiver B.J. Coleman added 3 catches for 50 yards and 1 touchdown. The Lions led 28-0 after the first quarter, 42-0 at halftime and 42-8 at the end of the third quarter.

MCCRORY 24, DES ARC 22

McCRORY — A decisive eight minutes in the second quarter was enough for McCrory (2-0, 1-0) to hold off Des Arc (1-1, 0-1) for a 6-2A conference victory. Down 8-0 early, McCrory recovered a fumble for a touchdown with 8:23 left before halftime and scored a two-point conversion to tie the game. Cade Campbell scored on a 6-yard run with 4:50 left in the half. Another two-point conversion gave the Jaguars a 16-8 lead. Campbell threw a touchdown pass to give McCrory a 24-8 lead with 22 seconds left before intermission. The Eagles quickly answered when senior Colt Covington returned the ensuing kick off 85 yards for a touchdown that left McCrory leading 24-16 deficit at halftime. Des Arc mustered a fourth-quarter drive that was capped by quarterback Noah Kennedy’s 1-yard touchdown run with 7:14 left,. Trey Lee gave the Eagles the early lead on a 3-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

SPRING HILL 36, PARKERS CHAPEL 29

EL DORADO — Parkers Chapel outgained Spring Hill 372-310, but the Trojans didn’t score on two chances inside the 5 in a loss at Victor Nipper Stadium. Spring Hill (2-0) rushed for 262 yards, lead by Jacob Row, who had 146 yards on 21 carries. Dezmon Jackson ran for 160 yards on 16 carries for Parkers Chapel (1-1), while Reagan Cates completed 8 of 16 passes for 156 yards.
