I-40 bridge work shuts lanes at night

Work on the Norman Road bridge over Interstate 40 will require overnight lane closures on I-40 in North Little Rock for five days beginning Monday, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

The contractor will continue removal of the old Norman Road bridge from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily through Friday, weather permitting. The new bridge has opened to traffic.

The work will require alternately closing eastbound and westbound lanes of I-40 between Crystal Hill Road and the Interstate 40/Interstate 430 interchange, alternately closing inside and outside lanes, the department said.

Short traffic stops will occur intermittently between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. each night while work is performed over the travel lanes. Traffic will be controlled using barrels, electronic message boards and advance warning signs, the department said.

This $38.4 million project is part of the agency's $1.8 billion Connecting Arkansas Program and includes widening 5.1 miles of I-40 to three lanes in each direction from I-430 to Arkansas 365. The project is expected to be complete in mid-2016.
