I-49 work to close lanes below bridge

Work on Interstate 49 will require overnight lane closures on Johnson Mill Boulevard in Johnson in Washington County for four days beginning today, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

Removal of a section of the bridge deck to accommodate the widening of I-49 will require the eastbound and westbound lanes to be alternately reduced to one lane between the east and west I-49 access ramp intersections from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily through Thursday, weather permitting.

Traffic will be controlled using flaggers and barrels, the department said. Mainline traffic on I-49 will not be affected.

This work is part of a $28.3 million project that is part of the agency's $1.8 billion Connecting Arkansas Program and includes widening 4.5 miles of I-49 to three lanes in each direction from U.S. 71B in Johnson to U.S. 412 in Springdale. The project is anticipated to be completed in late 2017, the department said.
