BURDETTE — Authorities investigating a fire that destroyed a vacant school building in a northeast Arkansas town suspect arson.

Blytheville Fire Chief Mike Carney said the old school in Burdette had basically burned to the ground by the time his crews arrived to assist local fire departments early Sunday morning. He told the Blytheville Courier News that only the corners of the building remained and there was some exterior damage to nearby City Hall.

Burdette Assistant Fire Chief Tommy Miller said firefighters were on the scene for about two hours.

He says authorities suspect arson, but the fire is still under investigation.
