Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton returned Monday to Arkansas for the second time during her bid for the White House.

During what her campaign called a "grassroots organizing event" at Philander Smith College, Clinton said: "We are not going to let our country be taken backwards."

Clinton also said she owes "so much to the people of Arkansas" for their support, adding that the state "holds so many wonderful memories for me and my family."

"When I'm president, Arkansas will be on my mind," Clinton said to applause.

Clinton said the centerpiece of her campaign is to ensure that Americans have a "fair shot" at opportunity through objectives such as more health care options, higher-quality education, more affordable college and an increased federal minimum wage.

She added that loopholes must be eliminated and the tax system changed "so that the people at the top pay their fair share."

In July, Clinton spoke at the state Democratic Party's annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner at Verizon Arena in North Little Rock.
