Cross County jail inmate mistakenly released, still missing

A man held on suspicion of rape, attempted murder and domestic battery was mistakenly released from the Cross County jail Monday, according to Helena-West Helena police.

Willie J. Ross, 53, whose whereabouts were unknown as of Thursday evening, was released from the Cross County jail after being wrongly identified as another inmate with the same last name, authorities said.

Though Ross, who was being held on $1 million bond, is charged in Phillips County, the county does not have an operational jail.

Helena-West Helena Police Chief Virgil Green said in a statement that Ross is considered "armed and dangerous."

He is described by police as a 5 foot 10 inches tall black man with black hair and brown eyes and weighing 150 pounds.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Helena-West Helena Police Department at (870) 572-3441.
