2 arrested after baby hospitalized with injuries

An Omaha couple was arrested after Missouri doctors found that the couple's 7-week-old infant had suffered multiple serious injuries, according to the Boone County sheriff's office.

Investigators from the sheriff's office were called to the Cox Medical Center in Branson, Mo., after the infant was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit with fractures of the skull, ribs, spine and fingers, and brain injuries, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

The couple had another 14-month-old child living in their home that also had suspicious injuries and that child was taken into protective custody, the release said.

The 7-week-old child's father, Steven Simmons, 26, was arrested Tuesday and booked into the Boone County jail where he was being held on charges of battery in the first degree upon a child less than 4 years old, battery in the second degree upon a child less than 12 years of age and permitting the abuse of a minor. Simmons was held in lieu of a $150,000 bond.

The child's mother, Rachel Clayton, 24, was also arrested Tuesday and booked into the Boone County jail, where she was held on charges of battery in the first degree upon a child less than 4 years of age and permitting the abuse of a minor. She is also being held in lieu of a $150,000 bond.
