Missouri quarterback Maty Mauk warms up before an NCAA college football game against Kentucky, Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015, in Lexington, Ky.

Knighten practiced Tuesday for the first time since pulling a groin muscle in the third quarter of a Sept. 12 loss to Missouri, but offensive coordinator Walt Bell suggested after practice that the injury hasn’t healed well enough to return and that freshman James Tabary will start against Idaho at 6 p.m. Saturday in Jonesboro.

“It looks like James will start,” Bell said.

Knighten told reporters after practice that he felt better but “didn’t want to risk it.”

Tabary has started the past two games. The redshirt freshman completed 21 of 24 passes for 255 yards and 3 touchdowns in a Sept. 19 victory over Missouri State but struggled last week in a loss at Toledo. He threw three interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, lost a fumble and was sacked six times.

Missouri suspends Mauk indefinitely

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Missouri quarterback Maty Mauk and backup tackle Malik Cuellar have been suspended indefinitely by the school for violating team rules and will not participate in the Tigers’ game against South Carolina on Saturday.

Associate athletic director Chad Moller released a statement Tuesday night confirming the suspensions, citing “disciplinary reasons related to violation of team policies.”

The status of the suspensions will be assessed after Saturday’s game, and the athletic department issued no additional comments.

Mauk spent Monday in Springfield with his family and did not attend team media day. His father and high school coach, Mike Mauk, underwent a procedure Monday to treat colorectal cancer.

Freshman Drew Lock likely will make his first college start in place of Mauk, who has thrown for 654 yards with 6 touchdowns and 4 interceptions while leading Missouri to a 3-1 record, including 0-1 in the SEC.
