SERVE THE ROCK

Regional chamber's comity encompasses many causes

Remember the plot of Ghostbusters II? (Oh, what? You remember it. You've seen it a bunch.) The spirit of a Carpathian warlord and a river of hot pink ectoplasm threaten to consume New York unless the whole city begins thinking positively. With the help of a marching Statue of Liberty and the upbeat tune "Higher and Higher," the Big Apple prevails.

That's what the Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce's Serve the Rock at Dickey-Stephens ballpark on St. Patrick's Day was like. Several hundred folks promenaded the concourse, checking out all the tables of good causes, from Lupus education and research to the Arkansas Breastfeeding Coalition. Because it was St. Patrick's Day, the volume of liquid good cheer went quickly. (I have it on good authority they had to take restorative action by about 6 o'clock.) And of course, through much of the early evening, eyes were flicking back to the televisions along the route to stay up-to-date on the University of Arkansas at Little Rock double-overtime game against Indiana's nastiest land-grant university (Purdue).

The goodwill inside the stadium was measurable with a P.K.E. (Psychokinetic Energy) meter.

The seventh annual event went off under mostly clear skies and gentle winds. It was sponsored by Agape Church, in partnership with Choctaw Casino Hotel and the Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau, and supported by Centennial Bank.
