Centerton Police investigate a reported home invasion and shooting Tuesday on Torbay Trace in Centerton. According to police, a woman called 911 at 8:12 a.m. and said intruders were breaking into her home, Centerton Police Cpt. Kris Arthur said.

Centerton Police Capt. Kristopher Arthur said the woman was shot in the stomach and taken to Northwest Medical Center in Bentonville. She was conscious and able to talk with police when she was transported to the hospital, Arthur said.

The woman, who was identified as Leigh Parker, called 911 at 8:12 a.m. She said intruders were breaking into her home, Arthur said. The woman retrieved a gun and hid in a closet in the rear of the home at 1220 Torbay Trace.

The men came into the room and charged the woman while she was in the closet, Arthur said.

According to a news release from Centerton police, the woman and men struggled over the gun and the firearm discharged. It said the woman was wounded in her stomach and leg.

The woman suffered nonlife-threatening injuries and was being evaluated Tuesday afternoon at the hospital, according to the police.

"This is the first home invasion that I've ever known to happen in Centerton," Arthur said. "It's an anomaly."

Rusty Parker went to his home at 1220 Torbay Trace to collect some things before returning to the hospital to be with his wife.

Parker confirmed his wife had been shot and was in the hospital, and that she is expected to make a full recovery.

Rusty Parker said his wife is doing well and she may have to spend the night in the hospital.

Police suspect the men entered the home through an open garage, Arthur said.

The men fled the scene after the shooting, Arthur said. Arthur did not know whether they fled on foot or in a vehicle.

Police searched door-to-door but did not find the men, Arthur said.

Darrell Redden, who lives on Torbay Trace but several houses from the Parkers, said he walked outside Tuesday morning and saw numerous police officers on the street.

"You usually don't see many police officers in this neighborhood," Redden said. "One may ride through occasionally, but there's never any trouble."

Redden has lived in his home for seven years, but said he did not know Leigh Parker.

The intruders were described as two white males in their late teens to early 20s, according to Arthur. One man was wearing white shoes and bluejeans, with a red bandanna on his face, Arthur said.

The other man is described as thin and wearing dark clothes, Arthur said.

According to the news release, Centerton police are interviewing people and reviewing all the evidence in an effort to identify the two suspects.

Arthur said the Benton County sheriff's office and the Bentonville and Highfill police departments assisted Centerton police with the case.

Anyone with information concerning the case can call Centerton police at 479-273-5532.
