UA Global Campus to teach work safety

The University of Arkansas Global Campus is offering a briefing on workplace safety compliance later this month in Rogers.

The course examines industry practices and compliance efforts of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, according to a release. Participants will learn how to access OSHA briefing and training programs, compliance expectations, existing standards and penalties for not complying with the law.

The event can be attended in person from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. April 26 at the Global Campus at 3300 Market St. in Rogers or online. The cost of the course is $59 with some discounts available. Registration for the briefing can be completed online at globalcampus.uark.edu.

J.B. Hunt's Simpson wins logistics award

J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. executive Shelley Simpson has been named the recipient of the 2016 Distinguished Woman in Logistics Award.

The award is presented by the Wisconsin-based Women in Trucking Association. Simpson was among three finalists for the award, joining Elizabeth Fretheim, the director of logistics sustainability at Wal-Mart Stores Inc., and Red Arrow Logistics Chief Executive Officer Liz Lasater.

Simpson is the chief marketing officer and president of J.B. Hunt's Trucking and Integrated Capacity Solutions segments. She won the award after helping J.B. Hunt increase revenue from $4.5 billion to $6.2 billion over the past five years, according to a news release.

"Increasing revenue by nearly $2 billion over a five-year period shows she is a mover and knows how to get things done," Ellen Voie, president and CEO of Women in Trucking said in a news release.

Index up 1.39 Friday; for week, only 3 gain

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, rose 1.39 to 318.07 Friday.

Thirteen stocks advanced and five declined.

Murphy Oil gained 5.1 percent in below-average volume.

Dillard's lost 2.5 percent in heavy trading.

For the week, 14 stocks declined, three advanced and one was unchanged.

Murphy Oil rose 5.9 percent for the week.

USA Truck fell 15.8 percent for the week.

Total volume for the index Friday was 18.2 million shares.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
