2016 Sweethearts hit the red carpet at American Heart Association ball

Draped red velvet curtains worthy of a Hollywood award show provided a backdrop for the presentation of the 2016 Sweethearts at the annual Heart Ball on April 2 in the Statehouse Convention Center's Wally Allen Ballroom.

Ignite Action was this year's theme, and organizers gave the black-tie affair a Hollywood twist. In addition to the red carpet fashions worn by attendees and glamorous table settings, blockbuster movie snippets and songs were played on screens at the front of the room and in the lobby during the reception.

The event, a culmination of a program by the American Heart Association, honored 84 sophomores who completed eight months of heart health education and volunteering. Two young women received special recognition. Megan Alley was named the Sotomora Service Award Winner for having volunteered the most hours, and Shelby Worsham received the Allison Justiss Award, a $5,000 college scholarship.

Dr. Thomas Conley was named the Worthen-Cornett Award Winner for his time as board president and 20 years of volunteering with the Heart Association.

Legacy Termite and Pest Control received the Jerry Davis Corporate Award for its support.

Sharon and Kevin Lamb served as Heart Ball co-chairmen.
