NCAA to report on ASU violation

The NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions will release a public report this morning regarding violations self-reported by Arkansas State, according to an email sent by the NCAA to ASU on Tuesday.

The email, sent to ASU Chancellor Tim Hudson and obtained by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette through a Freedom of Information Act request, said the NCAA would post the public report to its website at 11 a.m. today.

The email did not specify what sports were involved, but an ASU spokesman said Tuesday that the school recommended a $4,000 fine and to vacate one men's basketball victory from the 2015-2016 season.

ASU Athletic Director Terry Mohajir declined to comment through a spokesman, citing the NCAA's request to not comment until after the NCAA releases its report. The spokesman said ASU has cooperated with the NCAA.

Former ASU Coach John Brady told the Democrat-Gazette by phone Tuesday that there was a "small issue" during last season, which led to him being interviewed by the NCAA for 10 minutes on the phone in January. Brady said the interview was regarding one assistant coach providing a player with Adidas clothing. The ASU athletics department has an apparel contract with Adidas.

Brady said ASU fired an assistant coach during the season over the issue, which he described as "inadvertent."

"What our assistant coach did was give our guy too much -- what do you call it? -- gear through Adidas, and he shouldn't have done it," Brady said. "He didn't run it by me or [senior associate athletic director] Rich Zvosec. ... I never thought nothing about it. We let the guy go."

Brady, who has relocated to New Orleans, declined to name the coach, and an ASU spokesman said he couldn't comment on personnel matters. In December, ASU removed director of basketball operations Kyle Drake from its list of staff members in its game notes.

"It wasn't like it helped him recruit him or nothing," Brady said. "The guy just made a mistake."

ASU finished 11-20 overall and 7-13 in the Sun Belt Conference in Brady's final season as coach. He announced after a Nov. 16 victory over Lyon in Jonesboro that he wouldn't seek an extension to his contract that expired April 1. Brady was 121-129 in eight seasons with the Red Wolves.

ASU hired Coach Grant McCasland, who spent the past five seasons as an assistant at Baylor, on March 16.
