Dionne B. Jackson

Where I live: Secluded Hills in Little Rock

Occupation: I am an assistant professor and chairman of the education department at Hendrix College, and, as of July 1, I will be the vice president of diversity and inclusion and chief diversity officer at Hendrix.

My favorite space is: our kitchen.

Why? When we moved back to Arkansas, as we searched for a home I expressed to my husband that I wanted a kitchen big enough for me to: cook with my family; have people visit with me in the kitchen while I cooked; and be able to view my kids outside in the backyard while I cooked and they played. I am able to do all of this and more in our kitchen. As far as work space, I absolutely love the counter between the refrigerator and stove. This space is also large enough for my kids to assist me with cooking. The island is a wonderful space for serving food during holidays and special occasions, and it is the place where my husband often hangs out to sample what I cook. One of the biggest joys of this space is the natural light.

If I could make one change to improve this space, I would: Do a total update! Not to the layout but to the aesthetics. Our kitchen reflects more of the '90s than today, so it would be nice to be able to update the lighting, floors, appliances and cabinets.
