Speaker Ryan speaks

Item: On Tuesday this past week, the speaker of the United States House of Representatives issued a statement. About the rumors that he'd run for president. At the convention. Without any delegates. Which, in this particular election cycle, wouldn't be surprising. Nothing is going as planned.

So Paul Ryan held a news conference. And said:

"I want to put that to rest once and for all."

But he didn't say "forever," did he? Remember, he once said he didn't want to be Speaker.

"Let me be clear: I do not want, nor will I accept, the Republican nomination."

Hmmm. What do you think is his game? We can't find a Clinton clause anywhere in there, but surely there's a hidden meaning. Wiggle room. A wink and a nod. But he's being so clever we can't figure it out.

He went on:

"So let me speak directly to the delegates on this: If no candidate has a majority on the first ballot, I believe you should only choose a person who actually participated in the primary."

Aha! Does participated in the primary mean casting a vote? Which, as a good citizen, political leader and Republican from Wisconsin, surely Paul Ryan did.

"Count me out."

So, Speaker Ryan, . . . you're saying there's a chance . . . .
