MEACHAM GREETS 'EM

Biographer of presidents pens autographs at UALR lecture

You might say Jon Meacham met each 'em when he came through April 4 and 5. The author of biographies of Presidents Andrew Jackson, Thomas Jefferson and, most recently, George H.W. Bush, hung out inside the art galleries at the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, signing as many of his books (and perhaps some that were not) and greeting as many readers as made themselves available to him.

By all accounts, his speech just moments earlier was a delight. "Great sense of humor -- double entendres" and all manner of quipping devices, said former state Supreme Court Justice Robert Brown, who sits on the board of the Winthrop Rockefeller Distinguished Lecture Series which, in conjunction with the Clinton School of Public Service speaker series, brought the author to town.

After the book signing and reception at UALR, a select group of about two dozen, including the school's chancellor and the state's governor, met at Brave New Restaurant on the banks of the Arkansas River north of town and dined around a single table capacious enough to accommodate.
