U.S. House approves measure to rename Arkansas post office after POW

LITTLE ROCK — U.S. Rep. French Hill says the U.S. House has passed a resolution to rename the post office in Perryville after an Arkansas native who was killed in the Vietnam War.

Hill said the House on Monday passed the resolution to name the post office the Harold George Bennett Post Office.

Hill introduced the resolution and said a companion measure was introduced in the Senate by Sen. John Boozman.

Hill said in a news release that Bennett was a native of the Thornburg community about 7 miles south of Perryville and that he was the first American prisoner of war killed in Vietnam when he was executed June 25, 1965, after three escape attempts.
