Three separate wrecks on Interstate 40 near Lonoke backed up traffic in the eastbound and westbound lanes for more than an hour Tuesday morning, Arkansas State Police said.

Police are rerouting traffic on I-40 west at exit 183 onto Highway 13 and then to Highway 70 after an accident and vehicle fires occurred around 11 a.m., Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department spokesman Danny Straessle said. The westbound lanes were still closed right before noon.

Straessle said at least one person was killed.

Near the same time, two wrecks on I-40 east closed lanes near the 173 mile marker, Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler said. Traffic was diverted at exit 165 before lanes reopened around 11:45 a.m.

One crash in the eastbound lane involved an RV*, a Democrat-Gazette photographer on the scene reported.
