School elections for Pulaski, Helena districts set for November cause glitches

LITTLE ROCK — County election officials say a decision to move school board elections for two Arkansas school districts from September to November is causing a logistical nightmare.

Pulaski County's Director of Elections Bryan Poe said the mandate made by the Arkansas Department of Education means thousands of voters face voting in two separate Nov. 8 elections because the state's school election laws exclude all but school matters from those ballots.

A law passed last year allows school boards to move school elections to November.

State Education Commissioner Johnny Key set the November election date for the Pulaski County Special School District and the Helena-West Helena School District, which the state took over in June 2011 because of financial mismanagement and overspending. The districts were removed from state control last month.
