Fayetteville traffic stop ends in officer-involved shooting

Two Fayetteville police officers were involved in a shooting Saturday morning in which a Marianna man was shot multiple times after failing to comply during a traffic stop, authorities said.

The officers involved in the shooting were Cpl. Patrick Hanby and Officer Brandon Jones, who has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation in accordance with department policy.

Hanby and Jones stopped Willie Tillman, 33, just before 2:30 a.m. at 2337 N. College Ave. for driving his maroon Chrysler 200 without headlights, police said.

Tillman got out of the car, but tried to flee seconds later by diving back into the vehicle, according to a news release from the police department. The officers, who were partially in the car, were dragged a short distance before they could use their Tasers on Tillman when the vehicle came to a stop.

Police said the Tasers were ineffective, and Tillman continued driving north on College Avenue with one officer still in the car. During the struggle, the officer shot Tillman multiple times in the chest, abdomen and leg.

It was not clear which officer shot Tillman.

Tillman came to a stop at 380 E. Sunbridge Drive, where officers pulled him from the vehicle and began administering first aid. He was taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries, according to the release.

Tillman is wanted in Washington and Pope counties for felony drug charges. He also had a felony warrant with the Arkansas Department of Community Corrections for a parole violation, according to the release.
