John Brown gains new status

John Brown University has achieved a new status, according to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

The private Christian school in Siloam Springs now is classified with other Master's Colleges and Universities, in the Medium Programs subcategory, the university announced. Previously, the school had been categorized with Baccalaureate Colleges.

"We're proud of the progress and growth that this new classification represents for our institution," Ed Ericson, vice president of academic affairs, said in a statement.

John Brown typically awards about 150 master's degrees each year, said Johanna Musgrave, associate director for community relations. She said John Brown has been adding master's programs, including a master's of fine arts that enrolled its first students last fall.

The school will now be ranked with other regional universities by U.S. News and World Report, according to John Brown, with peer institutions that include Belmont University in Tennessee and Elon University in North Carolina.

John Brown had previously been ranked as a regional college by U.S. News and World Report. The school enrolls more than 2,700 students.
