• Pope Francis made a surprise visit to Villa Borghese, one of Rome's main parks, to participate in an Earth Day event, appearing with an Italian priest who has denounced Naples-area mobsters for systematically dumping toxic waste on farmland.

• Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the Algerian president, who had a stroke in 2013 and has been dogged by rumors of poor health since an appearance with the French prime minister earlier this month, traveled to Switzerland for what his office described as "periodic medical tests."

• Gisela Stuart, a British lawmaker and co-chairman of a group pushing for Britain to leave the European Union, called for French far-right political leader Marine Le Pen to be banned from the U.K. after Le Pen's National Front party said she plans to travel to Britain to support the exit.

• Andrew Aiken, CEO of the Palm Beach Zoo in Florida, said Stacey Konwiser, a zookeeper who was killed when a male Malayan tiger attacked her in an enclosure, broke zoo policy when she entered the enclosure "after it was clearly designated as accessible by a tiger."

• Seif Eddin Mustafa, the 59-year-old who prosecutors say admitted hijacking an EgyptAir flight and diverting it to Cyprus last month, got a three-week pause in proceedings for his extradition to Egypt after prosecutors requested more time to examine documents from Egyptian authorities.

• Reza Baluchi, a long-distance runner who was attempting to travel from Pompano Beach, Fla., to Bermuda in an inflatable bubble, was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard, which was towing his "hydropod" to shore.
