As district splits, events to aid those not rehired

The Pulaski County Special School District and the Governor's Dislocated Worker Task Force are holding two workshops to assist district employees affected by the coming detachment of the new Jacksonville/North Pulaski School District.

The separation of the new Jacksonville district from the Pulaski County Special district will take effect July 1. In anticipating the division, the Pulaski County Special district has notified its employees in the Jacksonville-area schools that they will not be rehired by the Pulaski County Special district for the 2016-17 school year.

The sessions, which will include career counseling and resume development, are scheduled for 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. May 10 in the auditorium at Jacksonville High School, 2400 Linda Lane in Jacksonville; and from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. May 12 in the boardroom of the Pulaski County Special district's administration building, 925 E. Dixon Road in Little Rock.

In addition to the two workshops, the district will host the Arkansas Mobile Workforce Center, which is a traveling unit outfitted to assist those needing to find new employment. The Arkansas Mobile Workforce Center will be at Jacksonville High from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. May 24 and from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. May 26 at the district's administration building.

Shawn Burgess, director of human resources for the school district, said the services are available to all district employees.

"We may have employees who want to learn more about the workforce today, or how they can update their resume to be prepared for future job opportunities. We welcome those PCSSD employees as well," she said.

More information about the workshops is available by calling the district's human resources office at (501) 234-2030.
