ARKANSAS STATE 8, UAPB 3

UAPB led 2-1 after two innings of Tuesday’s seven-inning game at Tomlinson Stadium in Jonesboro, but Arkansas State responded with two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth.

The Golden Lions’ two runs in the second inning came on a passed ball by ASU catcher Daltan Lovell and an RBI single from Jerimiah Figueroa. The Red Wolves cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly from Tony Ortiz.

ASU (19-21) took the lead in the fifth inning. Joe Schrimpf was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Garrett Rucker reached on a fielder’s choice as Schrimpf was thrown out at second base, but Rucker advanced on a fielding error by UAPB shortstop Robert Colon. Tanner Ring then hit a triple to right-center field, scoring Rucker to tie the game at 2-2.

Jeremy Brown followed with a double down the left field line to score Ring and give ASU a 3-2 lead.

UAPB (17-21) tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI single by Dontrell Brown, but ASU took control of the game in the bottom of the inning.

Lovell lined out to start the inning, then Ortiz doubled down the left field line. Ty White lined out for the second out of the inning, Ortiz advanced to third on a wild pitch and Schrimpf drew a four-pitch walk. Rucker singled to right field, scoring Ortiz for a 4-3 lead. Schrimpf scored when Ring reached on an error by Aderly Perez, then Ring and Rucker pulled off a double steal to advance to second and third.

They both scored on Brown’s single to left field for a 7-3 lead.

The Red Wolves added another run in the seventh inning when Jake Bakamus scored on a wild pitch. Lovell and Ortiz were both 2 for 3 to lead ASU, which stranded 8 baserunners, while Brown was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI.

UAPB managed five hits as a team, coming from Figueroa, Brown, Perez, Jordan Knox and Joshua Williams. Peyton Culbertson (3-0) went the distance for the Red Wolves and had three strikeouts.

Blake Estep (3-4) took the loss for the Golden Lions after allowing 5 runs — 2 earned — on 4 hits with 1 walk in 1 2/3 innings.
