Travs pitcher dominates on 79 pitches

Jordan Kipper allowed two hits in eight innings to help the Arkansas Travelers defeat the Tulsa Drillers 3-0 on Tuesday night in front of an announced crowd of 2,948 at ONEOK Field in Tulsa.

Kipper gave up a one-out single to Jacob Scavuzzo in the bottom of the second inning, then retired the next 17 batters. Scavuzzo singled to lead off the bottom of the eighth for Tulsa, but Kipper got Willie Calhoun to ground into a double play and struck out Tyler Ogle to end the inning.

Geoff Broussard entered in the bottom of the ninth for Kipper. He allowed a leadoff single to Yadir Drake but stranded him at first. Alex Verdugo struck out to end the game as Broussard earned his second save of the season.

Kipper (2-0) struck out one and didn't walk a batter in 79 pitches.

Eric Aguilera went 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI to lead the Travs offense. Anthony Bemboom had three hits.

The Travs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Drillers starter Felipe Gonzalez (0-4).

Bo Way led off the game with a single. Sherman Johnson doubled to put runners on second and third with no one out. Chad Hinshaw struck out, but Aguilera singled to left field to score Way for a 1-0 lead. Johnson came home on Wade Wass' groundout to make it 2-0.

Arkansas added a run in the top of the second inning for a 3-0 advantage. Alex Yarbrough walked, Bemboom singled, and Yarbrough scored on Anthony Phillips sacrifice fly.

Naturals 5, Cardinals 2

Christian Binford retired the final 18 hitters he faced, and Northwest Arkansas broke through with five runs in the seventh inning Tuesday night at Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo.

The Naturals' 23-year-old right-hander surrendered a leadoff walk, a double and a two-run hit in the second inning, but that was it. He struck out seven while allowing two hits.

In the seventh inning, center fielder Bubba Starling ignited the offense with a single before the next batter, Hunter Dozier, drew a walk on five pitches. Mauricio Ramos singled into center field to score Starling from second to cut the Springfield lead to 2-1. Frank Schwindel followed with a three-run home run over the left-center field wall to put the Naturals in front for good.
