Arkansas Democrat-Gazette NFL mock draft

1.LOS ANGELES RAMS

(FROM TENNESSEE TITANS)

PICK QB Jared Goff, California

COMMENT The Rams need a quarterback to compete with the Seahawks and Cardinals in the NFC West. They’ll turn to Goff, who was the Pac-12’s best signal caller in 2015.

2.PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (FROM

CLEVELAND BROWNS)

PICK QB Carson Wentz, North Dakota State

COMMENT New coach Doug Pederson, a former quarterback himself, gets his quarterback. Wentz won two FCS titles at North Dakota State.

3.SAN DIEGO CHARGERS

PICK DE DeForest Buckner, Oregon COMMENT The Chargers make the first surprising move of the draft, taking the former Oregon Duck.

4.DALLAS COWBOYS

PICK DB Jalen Ramsey, Florida State COMMENT Ramsey is the best defensive player in the draft, and the Cowboys will be more than happy to take the former Seminoles standout.

5.JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

PICK LB Myles Jack, UCLA

COMMENT There are durability concerns about Jack and his knee, but the Jaguars take him anyway, needing to add to a defense that faces Andrew Luck twice a year.

6.BALTIMORE RAVENS

PICK OT Laremy Tunsil, Mississippi COMMENT Twenty years after picking future Hall of Famer Jonathan Ogden, the Ravens get another franchise tackle in the first round.

7.SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

PICK DE Joey Bosa, Ohio State

COMMENT After missing the playoffs the past two seasons, the 49ers must improve a defensive unit that has fallen on hard times because of retirements and injuries.

8.CLEVELAND BROWNS

(FROM PHILADELPHIA VIA MIAMI)

PICK OT Ronnie Stanley, Notre Dame COMMENT Cleveland could trade back in the draft again one week after moving down from the No. 2 pick. But if the Browns keep the eighth pick, offensive line could be the way to go here.

9.TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

PICK CB Vernon Hargreaves III, Florida

COMMENT The son of Arkansas assistant coach Vernon Hargreaves heads to one of the up-and-coming teams in the NFC.

10.NEW YORK GIANTS

PICK OT Jack Conklin, Michigan State

COMMENT The Giants have several needs, but picking Conklin would be the smart move.

11.CHICAGO BEARS

PICK LB Leonard Floyd, Georgia

COMMENT Floyd, one of the top edge rushers in the draft, would fit nicely in the Bears’ 3-4 defense.

12.NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

PICK DT Sheldon Rankins, Louisville COMMENT Rankins will provide disruption for a defense that allowed 29.8 points and 413.8 yards per game last season.

13.MIAMI DOLPHINS (FROM

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES)

PICK RB Ezekiel Elliott, Ohio State COMMENT The Dolphins lost Lamar Miller to free agency. Elliott becomes the starting RB from Day One.

14.OAKLAND RAIDERS

PICK DE Shaq Lawson, Clemson COMMENT Lawson, Khalil Mack and Bruce Irvin will terrorize opponents in the AFC West.

15.TENNESSEE TITANS (FROM

LOS ANGELES RAMS)

PICK OT Taylor Decker, Ohio State COMMENT Tennessee had the No. 1 pick but traded down. Protecting Marcus Mariota is the No. 1 priority.

16.DETROIT LIONS

PICK DT A’Shawn Robinson, Alabama

COMMENT Robinson could go earlier, but if he is still at No. 16, the Lions pounce on him.

17.ATLANTA FALCONS

PICK LB Darron Lee, Ohio State

COMMENT Atlanta’s defense gets more athletic with the addition of Lee.

18.INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

PICK CB Eli Apple, Ohio State

COMMENT Apple and Pro Bowler Vontae Davis will give AFC South offensive coordinators fits.

19.BUFFALO BILLS

PICK DE Noah Spence, Eastern Kentucky

COMMENT Rex Ryan is a defensive coach. Expect Buffalo to add to its defense here.

20.NEW YORK JETS

PICK QB Paxton Lynch, Memphis COMMENT Lynch can sit for a year behind either Geno Smith or Ryan Fitzpatrick, if he is re-signed.

21.WASHINGTON REDSKINS

PICK LB Reggie Ragland, Alabama COMMENT Last year’s NFC East champs get better on defense with the Alabama run stopper.

22.HOUSTON TEXANS

PICK WR Josh Doctson, TCU

COMMENT The Horned Frogs star gives new Texans QB Brock Osweiler a second weapon behind DeAndre Hopkins.

23.MINNESOTA VIKINGS

PICK WR Laquon Treadwell, Mississippi

COMMENT Teddy Bridgewater will love having an outside threat like Treadwell in the Twin Cities.

24.CINCINNATI BENGALS

PICK WR Corey Coleman, Baylor COMMENT Maybe Coleman will help the Bengals win their first playoff game since the 1990 season.

25.PITTSBURGH STEELERS

PICK S Karl Joseph, West Virginia COMMENT Pittsburgh’s secondary must improve as it returns just two starters — safety Mike Mitchell and cornerback William Gay.

26.SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

PICK C Ryan Kelly, Alabama

COMMENT Kelly, the Rimington Trophy winner in 2015, figures to step in and fill a hole Max Unger left when he was traded to New Orleans for Jimmy Graham a year ago.

27.GREEN BAY PACKERS

PICK DT Andrew Billings, Baylor

COMMENT Green Bay lost B.J. Raji, so it finds Billings, who will be a good fit for Dom Capers’ 3-4 defense.

28.KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

PICK DT Robert Nkemdiche, Mississippi

COMMENT The Chiefs took a chance on troubled CB Marcus Peters in last year’s draft and he was a Pro Bowler. Nkemdiche is one of the top players in the draft but has slipped because of legal troubles.

29.ARIZONA CARDINALS

PICK DT Vernon Butler, Louisiana Tech

COMMENT Butler, 6-4, 323 pounds, gives the Cardinals’ defensive line a boost.

30.CAROLINA PANTHERS

PICK OT Germain Ifedi, Texas A&M COMMENT The Panthers’ offensive line was manhandled in Super Bowl 50 by the Broncos. Look for Ifedi to shore up that unit.

31.DENVER BRONCOS

PICK DT Jarran Reed, Alabama

COMMENT Denver lost Malik Jackson to free agency. Reed comes in and takes over.

NOTE The New England Patriots, who would have picked 29th in this year’s draft, was ordered by the league to forfeit their first-round pick because of their involvement in illegally deflating footballs during the AFC Championship Game in January 2015.
