Crews respond to multiple reports of lightning hitting buildings in Little Rock

Little Rock Fire Department crews responded to at least three reports of lightning hitting buildings Friday as strong storms moved through.

There was no serious damage reported in two of the cases while details on the third weren't immediately known.

Capt. Jason Weaver said the Chr-Eyton Electric Company building at 8900 Interstate 30 was reported to have been struck shortly after 7:45 a.m. Fire crews investigated after workers smelled smoke, but no serious problems were found, Weaver said.

Then shortly after 8 a.m., lightning was reported to have struck a house and started a fire at 6700 Tracy Avenue. Weaver said the flames were out when firefighters arrived a short time later.

A third lightning strike was reported after 8:30 a.m. at a building near Mesquite Drive and Gamble Road. It wasn't immediately clear if any damage was reported.

Weaver said crews anticipate responding to lightning strikes during storms. Sometimes the strikes start fires while other times they cause electrical problems in the home, Weaver said.

"It's its own sort of animal," he said. "It varies every time."
