UA names Miller dean of health, education

FAYETTEVILLE -- Michael T. Miller has been named dean of the College of Education and Health Professions at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

Miller joined UA's faculty in 2003 and led its higher education program before taking on other leadership roles within the college. He will begin a two-year term July 1, the university announced Tuesday.

He will be paid $215,000. As an associate dean, Miller earns a salary of $164,039.

"The College of Education and Health Professions serves Arkansas by providing well trained and highly skilled teachers and medical professionals who are crucial to the future of our state," Chancellor Joe Steinmetz said in a statement, adding that Miller "has the experience we need to make this college even stronger."

Miller earned a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's degree in higher education from Southern Illinois University, where he also went on to lead for three years the school's office of annual giving.

He earned a doctorate from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and then taught there before moving on to positions at the University of Alabama and San Jose State University before arriving at the UA.

Miller replaces Tom Smith, dean since 2010. Smith will rejoin the college's special education program.
