Banjo master, songwriter, funk band slated to perform

Kentucky banjo master Brett Ratliff will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at a Little Rock Folk Club concert at Hibernia Irish Tavern in Little Rock. Admission is $15, $8 for students with ID and free for accompanied children age 12 and under.

Ratliff grew up in the coal camps of Van Lear, Ky., and has taught traditional mountain music at workshops and music camps that include the Cowan Creek Mountain Music School in Letcher County, Ky.; the Swannanoa (N.C.) Gathering; Augusta Heritage's Early Country Music Week in Elkins, W.Va.; Sore Fingers Week in Oxfordshire, England; and Festival of American Fiddle Tunes in Port Townsend, Wash.

He has toured with the Clack Mountain String Band, the Dirk Powell Band and Rich & the Po' Folk and he also released a solo album, Cold Icy Mountain, on June Appal Recordings in 2008.

Jinks, born and raised in Fort Worth, has this self-description in his online biography: "Conceived in a honky tonk, long, long ago, Cody now makes his living in them."

Morgan is known as the leader of Whitey Morgan and the 78's, a band based in Flint, Mich.

Grind, an Alice in Chains tribute band, will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $10.

Chapter: Soul, a new funk band from New Orleans, will perform from 10:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Saturday at a new club, the Four Quarter Bar, in North Little Rock. Admission is $8.

The group is a four-piece band led by Calvin Johnson Jr. on tenor saxophone. He is a veteran of Big Sam's Funky Nation and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. The group also includes Kirk Joseph, a founding member of Dirty Dozen Brass Band, on sousaphone.

Rock group Candlebox will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, after a 7 p.m. opening set by Moxie, at Magic Springs & Crystal Falls Water and Theme Park.
