Arkansas woman killed, youth hurt after car runs off highway, hits tree head-on

An Arkansas woman was killed and a minor was injured Wednesday when the SUV they were in ran off a highway and crashed into a tree.

It happened shortly after 7 a.m. as Monte McCaghren, 66, of Mountainburg, drove a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe south on U.S. 71 in Mountainburg, Arkansas State Police said. The vehicle drove off the road to the right and struck a tree head-on.

McCaghren died in the crash, and police said the male minor who was a passenger in the vehicle was hurt and taken to the Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock. The report did not list the minor's age.

Police said conditions at the time were clear and dry.

The death was the 304th fatality on Arkansas roads so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
