News and notes
• Four players with Arkansas ties were called up or recalled to their parent clubs in the past week. Outfielder Brett Eibner (Razorbacks), who was traded by Kansas City to Oakland and was originally assigned to Class AAA Nashville, Tenn., was called up to Oakland on Thursday. His first hit in an Athletics uniform was a home run in Friday's 7-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Outfielder Andrew Benintendi (Razorbacks) was called up to the Boston Red Sox from Class AA Portland, Maine, on Wednesday. Infielder Matt Reynolds (Razorbacks) was recalled to the New York Mets from Class AAA Las Vegas on Monday when the Mets placed Jose Reyes on the disabled list with a left oblique strain. Reliever Blake Parker (Razorbacks/Fayetteville) was called up to the Seattle Mariners from Class AAA Tacoma on Thursday when the Mariners placed Steve Cishek on the disabled list with a torn labrum. Parker was designated for assignment Saturday, a move made to clear Parker from the 40-man roster and outright him to the minors after the Mariners acquired reliever Arquimedes Caminero from Pittsburgh.
• Third baseman Bobby Wernes (Razorbacks) was placed on the "temporarily inactive list" by the Quad Cities River Bandits (A Astros) on Wednesday. Wernes has struggled this season, hitting .186 in 75 games with no home runs and 12 RBI. Attempts to reach the team for comment were unsuccessful.
• Pitcher Richie Tate (Marked Tree) was released by the Carolina Mudcats (High-A Braves) on July 31. Tate, 23, was suspended in February for 100 games after a third positive test for a "drug of abuse." Under the minor league drug prevention and treatment program, the "drugs of abuse" category includes drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, opiates and LSD, and carries different penalties than those for performance-enhancing drugs like steroids, testosterone and human growth hormone. Tate has not pitched above Class A and has a 12-9 career record and 2.98 ERA in 111 relief appearances with 137 strikeouts in 178 1/3 innings.
