Arkansas police officer driving patrol vehicle hits, kills man pushing motorcycle

An Oklahoma man pushing his motorcycle on an Arkansas highway was hit and killed early Sunday by a Fort Smith police officer on his way to assist a colleague, Arkansas State Police said.

Jonathan Logston, 36, of Heavener, Okla., was pushing his 2007 Yamaha north in the southbound lane of U.S. 271 about 3:30 a.m., according to a preliminary state police report. The motorcycle's lights were not on.

Officer Jarrod Taylor was driving his police vehicle, a 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe, south on the highway when he hit Logston, who struck the windshield and front pillar of the vehicle.

State police described the conditions at the time of the crash as clear and dry.

It was the 307th death on Arkansas roads in 2016, according to preliminary state police information.
