Lane closures planned on I-49 near Johnson

Construction on Interstate 49 in Johnson and Springdale will require another round of overnight lane closures beginning today and lasting four nights, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

The lane closures -- from just south of Johnson Mill Boulevard in Johnson to U.S. 412, also called Sunset Avenue in Springdale -- will continue through Friday, weather permitting.

The inside and outside lanes of the interstate will be alternately closed to accommodate the removal of temporary concrete barriers, overlay the widened median and resurface the existing roadway in both directions, the department said. Traffic will be controlled using signs and barrels.

The northbound lane closures will take place between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., and the southbound I-49 lane closures will occur between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.

The work is part of a $28.3 million project to add two lanes to a four-lane, 4.5-mile section of I-49 between U.S. 71B in Johnson and U.S. 412. The department anticipates the project to be complete late this year.
