Car accident injures county judge

WALNUT RIDGE -- Lawrence County Judge Dale Freeman was injured in a car accident near Cabot on Wednesday morning and was listed in serious condition in a North Little Rock hospital, family members said.

Freeman, 75, of Powhatan, was headed to Little Rock to visit a friend in a hospital and to meet with officials for county business when the accident occurred shortly before 8 a.m. on U.S. 167.

Arkansas State Police officials did not have the accident report Wednesday afternoon and Tonya Brand, Freeman's daughter, did not know details of the wreck.

"We don't know what happened," Brand said. "We were called that [Freeman] was in an accident and we all came down here quickly."

Freeman won his bid as a Democrat for re-election for county judge in the March primary. He has no Republican challenger. Freeman has been the Lawrence County's top administrator since 2010.

Brand said her father was listed in serious condition in the intensive care unit at Baptist Health Medical Center in North Little Rock.

Walnut Ridge Mayor Charles Snapp said he met with Freeman on Tuesday evening to discuss industrial development prospects and that Freeman indicated he was leaving for Little Rock early Wednesday.

Freeman discussed 3 percent raises for county employees during the Lawrence County Quorum Court meeting Monday and chided Lawrence Memorial Hospital officers for making hospital board appointments without his approval.
