News and notes

• Pitcher Blake Parker (Arkansas Razorbacks/Fayetteville), who was designated for assignment by the Seattle Mariners on Aug. 6, was claimed off waivers by the New York Yankees on Tuesday. He made his first appearance for New York on Wednesday in a 9-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Parker allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits with 1 walk in 1 1/3 innings.

• Pitcher Andy Ferguson (Arkansas State/Benton) was promoted to Class AA Northwest Arkansas from High-A Wilmington, Del., on Monday. Ferguson took the loss in his final appearance for Wilmington on Aug. 7 in a 6-2 loss to the Potomac Nationals (High-A Nationals). He allowed 4 earned runs on 4 hits with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

• Pitcher James Teague (Razorbacks) was promoted to the Short-A Aberdeen IronBirds from the Baltimore Orioles' rookie team in the Gulf Coast League on Aug. 6. He got a victory in his first appearance for Aberdeen on Monday in a 6-3 victory over the Connecticut Tigers (Short-A Tigers). Teague allowed 1 hit with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings.

• Pitcher Ashur Tolliver (Sylvan Hills) was placed on the disabled list on July 31, retroactive to July 30, by the Norfolk Tides (AAA Orioles) with a left hamstring injury. Tolliver, 28, is being especially cautious after aggravating the injury for the fourth time in three years. An MRI last week revealed a tear in the hamstring. "It's kind of one of those things where you've got to be careful with it because you go out some days and you feel really good, and you can re-injure your hamstring really easily," Tolliver said to David Hall of The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, Va., earlier this week. "You're pretty prone to it once you've done it once, especially for about a year after that." Tolliver last pitched for the Tides on July 29 in a 2-1 loss to the Indianapolis Indians (AAA Pirates), in which he gave up 3 walks and had a strikeout in his only inning of work.

Around the horn

• Pitcher Jalen Beeks (Razorbacks/Fayetteville) has won each of his past three starts for the Portland Sea Dogs (AA Red Sox). His latest victory came Wednesday in a 16-1 victory over the Erie SeaWolves (AA Tigers), in which he allowed 2 hits with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts over 6 innings. Former Razorback Dominic Ficociello went 0 for 2 with 1 strikeout and 2 walks. ... Pitcher Mike Bolsinger (Razorbacks) lost in his first appearance for the Buffalo Bisons (AAA Blue Jays) on Aug. 7 in a 6-0 loss to the Pawtucket Red Sox (AAA Red Sox) in the first game of a doubleheader. Bolsinger allowed 2 earned runs on 3 hits with 2 strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings. ... Pitcher Dillon Drabble (Texarkana) took his first professional loss Monday as the AZL Royals (rookie Royals) lost to the AZL Padres (rookie Padres) 7-2. Drabble lasted 4 innings, giving up 5 earned runs -- 4 in the first inning -- on 10 hits with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. ... Pitcher Doug Willey (Razorbacks) took his first loss for the Orem Owlz (rookie Angels) on Aug. 6, but bounced back with his first professional save in his next appearance Tuesday. The loss came as the Owlz lost 7-4 to the Helena Brewers (rookie Brewers), in which Willey allowed 3 earned runs on 3 hits with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts in 2 innings. He went just 1 inning Tuesday in a 4-2 victory over the Missoula Osprey (rookie Diamondbacks), allowing 1 hit.
