Fishing alone in The Bass Federation National Championship, Fisher Davis of Mount Ida remained calm, patient and relaxed to win a $2,500 scholarship on Lake Guntersville, near Scottsboro, Ala.

The event was held in conjunction with the Forrest Wood Cup, which took place at Wheeler Lake near Huntsville, Ala.

In stifling heat and humidity, Davis got only six bites on his final day of competition, but he landed all six fish and culled one to claim the victory for a total two-day weight of about 20 pounds.

Like his father and mentor Mark Davis, Fisher Davis does not run all over a lake looking for a hot spot. Instead, he mines a few areas believing that fish will bite eventually if shown the right bait at the right time with the right presentation.

That’s how it worked out last Saturday when Davis found success on a grass flat with a Strike King Cut-R Worm.

“The coolest part about that was it wasn’t a mile from the takeoff,” Davis said.

Traditionally, pumpkinseed and watermelon are top colors for soft plastic baits in the summer, but Davis scored with junebug color, as did Beau Browning and McCoy Vereen in the Bassmaster Junior National Championship in Tennessee.

“I tried those, watermelon and pumpkinseed, but I got more bites with junebug,” Davis said.

Davis said he caught his fish off an edge where thin grass met thick grass.

Davis, who plays football for Mount Ida, said winning the championship was a great way to end the summer.
