FAYETTEVILLE -- The weather cooperated, the defense dialed its blitz pressure down a notch and the offense turned in a handful of big plays during Arkansas' first scrimmage of camp on Saturday at Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

The offense scored touchdowns on three of four red-zone series, Austin Allen led the first offense on a 75-yard touchdown drive, and freshman running back Devwah Whaley turned in the play of the day during a 112-play scrimmage.

Conditions softened after a brutal week of blistering heat, with gentle breezes and temperatures in the mid-80s.

"I was really pleased," Coach Bret Bielema said after the Hogs' 11th workout of camp. "I thought our guys came out with the right attitude and the right energy. We tapered off a little bit ... just to kind of get their legs back under them and I thought they looked really crisp on both sides."

Allen, a junior, took all his reps with the first offense and completed 14 of 19 passes for 151 yards. He directed a seven-play 75-yard touchdown drive during the first unit's only move-the-ball sequence. Allen went 2 for 2 for 27 yards on the drive, including a 20-yard completion to tight end Jeremy Sprinkle.

Rawleigh Williams III had 4 carries for 37 yards to set up Whaley's highlight-reel run, a tackle-breaking blast over the left side for an 11-yard touchdown.

"He's looked good all camp, some nice reads and nice cuts, but today you saw that gear that I saw in high school film," Bielema said of Whaley. "He definitely showed a burst today that hadn't been seen in practice and I think he turned some guys' heads.

Whaley had a scrimmage-high 96 rushing yards on 14 carries. Williams had a hard-earned 1-yard touchdown run among his 14 carries for 67 yards in his first live action since needing neck surgery for a displaced disc in his neck last October.

"Devwah is very, very impressive, but probably the guy that shined was Rawleigh," Bielema said. "To get back in the lineup, that's the first time he's been tackled since Auburn a year ago, so it was good to get him back in tackle football. He looked really, really good."

The defense registered eight "touch" sacks, three by converted defensive end Randy Ramsey and two by freshman Briston Guidry.

The only score during situational work, which accounted for a little more than half the scrimmage, came on Cole Kelley's 68-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Colbert against busted coverage by the backups.

The first-team offensive line, which consisted of tackles Dan Skipper and Jake Raulerson, with relief by Jalen Merrick and Colton Jackson, guards Hjalte Froholdt and Zach Rogers, and center Frank Ragnow allowed only a few pressures on Allen and one sack, a 9-yard loss by Jeremiah Ledbetter to end the unit's first six-play sequence.

Coach Bret Bielema said he asked defensive coordinator Robb Smith not to inundate the offense with exotic blitzing throughout the scrimmage, but there was still enough line stunts to keep things interesting.

"He still ramped it up though, don't get me wrong," Bielema said. "It wasn't like he was playing pure vanilla. He was probably mildly mixed, maybe a twisted swirl."

The starting offense was free of turnovers and penalties. The defense had two pass interference calls, on cornerbacks Ryan Pulley and Henre Toliver and accounted for two takeaways.

The first unit's first red-zone series, which started at the 21, produced the day's most disappointing series. On third and 6, Allen threw wide for uncovered Drew Morgan, who had plenty of open green ahead of him but could not come down with the catch. Cole Hedlund bounced his 35-yard field goal try off the right upright for no score.

Ty Storey, who split the second-team reps with Rafe Peavey and Cole Kelley, connected with Cheyenne O'Grady for a 9-yard touchdown to complete a three-play series from the 21.

Allen was in on a six-play, 18-yard touchdown drive capped by Williams' tough run from the 1, then Deon Stewart took an end around 4 yards for a score with Peavey at the controls to complete the red-zone work.

The second-team offense got two move-the-ball periods and did not score on the first. Khalia Hackett stuffed a third-and-1 run by Justice Hobbs, then Brandon Lewis sniffed out a bootleg run by Storey for lost yardage on fourth down.

Will Gragg's 31-yard catch and run and a pass interference call sparked the next series, though Guidry had back-to-back "sacks" of Storey to stop the drive at the 12. Adam McFain came on to make a 30-yard field goal for the final score of the day.
