School bus crashes in Arkansas on students' first day

The Perryville School District's superintendent applauded the efforts of a bus driver who kept a school bus upright as it went down an embankment Monday morning.

Walt Davis said the elementary and high school students on the bus didn't sustain any "obvious" injuries. He said they transferred to another bus or had parents pick them up to take them to their first day of school.

"We were very, very blessed," said Davis, who started as superintendent on July 1.

The accident occurred around 7:30 a.m. on Arkansas 9 near the Fourche La Fave River, Davis said. The bus went down a steep embankment and stopped short of going into the river, he said.

Davis said it was possible that the bus went down the embankment after the driver tried to avoid another wreck, but he wasn't sure. A call to Arkansas State Police was not immediately returned.
