Little Rock's The Rep names new artistic director

The Arkansas Repertory Theatre on Tuesday named John Miller-Stephany to replace its outgoing producing artistic director, ending a search that began earlier this year.

Miller-Stephany, who starts his role at the Little Rock-based theater company this October, has an extensive background in theater that includes leadership positions at The Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis and The Acting Company in New York, according to a news release.

“John Miller-Stephany has worked at some of the most significant theatres in the country,” said Brian Bush, chairman of The Rep's board of directors. “He is without a doubt the right leader for our organization at this point in our history. His leadership ensures a bright future for The Rep.”

He succeeds The Rep's producing artistic director of 17 years, Robert Hupp, who stepped down in June to take a job as artistic director of Syracuse Stage in Syracuse, N.Y., the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette previously reported.

“By all accounts — and from my personal observations over the past few months — The Rep is one of the most vibrant cultural organizations in Arkansas,” Miller-Stephany said. “I’m thrilled to join the greater Little Rock community and to work alongside my new neighbors and colleagues as together we write the next chapter in the life of this remarkable theatre.”
