• When the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Student Literacy Corps returns to McClellan High School this fall, they will try something new. The UALR interns will add writing skills to their work. "If a student is a weak reader, he is probably a weak writer," said Dr. Jim Parins, a UALR English professor who is the literacy corps' coordinator. Adding writing to create better readers begins a new chapter in the 4-year-old program, which UALR began in the 1988 spring semester.

• District Judge Vic Fleming plans to rule Monday on whether a special prosecutor will be appointed to pursue contempt-of-court charges against Pulaski County Sheriff Randy Johnson. In a hearing Friday, Fleming told attorneys that Monday's ruling will include whether he will recuse himself from the case that centers on the Pulaski County jail officials' refusal to accept people sentenced or ordered to jail. Pulaski County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Amanda Mankin-Mitchell entered an innocent plea for Johnson, who was not in court. Fleming scheduled a hearing for Sept. 8 in which he could issue a decision. The judge told County Attorney Karla Burnett that Johnson could face a penalty of 10 days in jail, which likely would be suspended, and a $500 fine for each of the 11 violations.
